Mouse: Sophie Okonedo in a Teen Summer Drama

Mouse is a 2026 coming-of-age film that follows a young woman who is trying to figure out who she is following a major change in the relationship that defined her life so far. During the summer before her final year of high school, the film focuses on a teenage girl named Minnie as she moves through feelings of grief and uncertainty while trying to strengthen the friendships in her life and discover the person she is outside the shadow of someone else.

The film will be released in select theaters on November 6, 2026. Unlike other films set in the world of teenagers, Mouse, will focus on the smaller details in the relationships of its characters. One of the relationships it will focus on is that of its teenage lead character Minnie, and how it changes and affects her and the people around her. (Box Office Mojo)

Mouse is a Modern Coming-of-Age Drama

Minnie, 17, and her best friend, Callie, have spent most of their lives together. The relationship has helped define both of their lives and how they view the world around them. In a sudden turn of events, Callie and Minnie’s relationship is disrupted and Minnie is left without the person who had socially and emotionally guided her through her life. Left to find her identity on her own, Minnie, for the first time in her life, has to go through a major change without her best friend.

That basic premise of Minnie trying to figure out who she is beyond someone else in a world that is also undergoing major changes, helps ground the film in the coming of age genre while uniquely focusing on the relationship loss and breakup of a young adult and how it affects them.

SOPHIE OKONEDO HAS A CENTRAL ROLE IN THE STORY

Sophie Okonedo plays the role of Helen, who is the mother of Callie, and begins to build a complicated connection with Minnie. The plot doesn’t have Minnie just moving on with a new group of friends, it brings her close to someone who is also affected by the same life altering event.

Mallen Kupferer portrays Minnie, while Chloe Coleman and Iman Vellani, who round out the cast, are also confirmed. David Hyde Pierce is one of the supporting players. The film is directed by Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson, with Thompson and O’Sullivan also co-writing the film. (Vancouver International Film Festival)

It sounds like the drama is built more on the strength of character relationships as opposed to special effects or big set pieces.

Friendship and Identity Form the Core of the Story

A unique element of Mouse is Minnie’s identity being shaped by Callie. Because Minnie has spent so much time in Callie’s shadow, her changing relationship with her also means she has to figure out who she is when that shadow is removed.

Her relationship with Helen adds to this as well. They both have a connection to Callie, but they are at very different places in her life, so that shared connection can bring them together, but makes their friendship complicated as well.

For people who enjoy smaller, more intimate dramas, this kind of story gives the film the ability to explore adolescence is a variety of other ways outside of the high school, dating and popularity story arcs which consume most teen movies.

The 2002 Setting

Because the story takes place in 2002, the film’s teenage characters reside in a world that is notably different from that of today’s always-connected teenagers. Characters don’t have constant access to social media and other means to communicate via the internet to immediately fill awkward silences or to communicate with friends to reinforce relationships. As such, the characters are directly dependent on their immediate environment to meet their social needs. The setting strongly supports the themes of isolation and personal connection the film seeks to address without turning to technology for answers.

Because Mouse takes place in 2002, when the teenage characters are directly affected by the events unfolding around them, the film gets to show isolation in a more immediate, and personally relatable way.

What Users Can Anticipate From Mouse

The evidence suggests this will be a thoughtful, character-driven drama focusing on themes of friendship, grief, and finding one’s own independent identity. Minnie is not a traditional ‘teen-movie’ lead, facing a simple, individual problem. The issue Minnie faces is more personal. She is trying to learn how to be in this world in a different way after her relationship which once defined her life, becomes dramatically different.

The two hour film, has already been made, and has been shown on the festival circuit, including the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, before its planned U.S. theatrical release. (Visit Films)

If you are interested in a coming-of-age story, that is less reliant on “big twists” and more on characters and relationships, then Minnie has a lot of promise to provide emotionally fulfilling story. With its November 2026 release, a wider audience will be able to see what happens to Minnie, and her connection to Helen, that helps shape who she will ultimately become.
